A sweet old lady

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

Yesterday I was supposed to meet up with my mother who had to grab something from our old apartment in the city. Which was perfect because I was getting my nails done in the same area. After I had new shiny claws and a satisfied smile on my face, we were to meet by her car right outside the apartment in 10 minutes. Remember that…10 minutes….

I was there 5 minutes early, so I decided to check my social media and send some pics of my freshly manicured nails to my friends.

Suddenly, an old Russian lady approached me and asked me about the new high school that had been built right across from my apartment building the year before. We then entered a question-answer-question-answer round, where I told her that I’m in the university studying to become a teacher and I’d like to work with younger kids in the future. And she told me that she was a teacher herself and shared her experience with me.

I was trying my best to be as invested in the conversation as I could because my Russian isn’t perfect and I understood about 80% of what she was saying. After like 10 minutes of talking to her I was getting kinda lost, because she started getting off-topic and speaking about something very specific. But she showed no signs of stopping and could’ve kept going for at least an hour or two.

I was feeling soo bad for her ‘cause it was clear to me that she had no one else to talk to and she was looking for a conversation buddy in a complete stranger. I glanced at my phone and realized that I had been standing by the car and talking to the 80-year-0ld for about 15 minutes!!!! I was so frustrated towards my mother as she was supposed to be outside like 10 f-ing minutes ago and this lady has almost TALKED MY EAR OFF!!

Another 2 minutes or so passed and I could finally see my mum approaching the car from the corner of my eye. At this point, I had no idea where the woman was with her story, but I politely got out of the conversation, thanked her and hopped in the car. She smiled, wished me the best and continued to walk down the street.

As soon as I shut the car door, I asked her what had taken her so long. I was annoyed, yet not surprised as being late is so like her, and quite honestly, runs in the family…

Long story short…she was watering the plants and knocked over the watering can by accident and spent the entire time drying the living room carpet. Well, yes, that is also not unusual when it comes to her.

We both had a nice laugh about the whole afternoon.
